Russia warships pass through English Channel under UK Navy’s watchful eye

An “armada” of Russian warships is passing between the UK and France, Friday, as Russia boosts its military presence in the Mediterranean Sea.

Two British naval ships are shadowing the Russian vessels, despite the group remaining in international waters. Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said this was "part of our steadfast commitment to keep Britain safe".

The aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov and two other ships are thought to be making their way to the eastern Mediterranean to support Russian military efforts in Syria.

The ships are travelling south from their northern Russian base in Severomorsk, past Norway, and through the Straights of Gibraltar.

It is seen by some as a show of military might, as it "would be easier to deploy more planes to Russia’s airbase in Syria.
